Thanking & Giving
This edition of our USANA newsletter is filled with gratitude to you for supporting us in our USANA Business, three new USANA Associates that joined our team in October, our Health and Wellness Open House, Dr. Wentz on flu vaccinations, Blog Updates, new product release Probiotics Plus, Children's Hunger Fund & USANA, and even more giving.
"I dream of a world free from pain and suffering. I dream of a world free from disease. The USANA family will be the healthiest family on earth". Dr. Wentz
- Rod Chastain- He is a life long friend and has always had an interest in health. He is married and a very young Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather.
- Y-lan Nguyen- She is a Senior attending U.C. Berkeley.
- Jon Uyehara- A dedicated family man with two children. His Son is a Speed Skater and is ranked in the U.S. Speed Skating Circle and is looking forward to qualify for the Winter Olympics in 2014.
On October 24th we invited over two hundred of our neighbors to come by and visit us and learn about making healthier choices in their lives. There were samples of USANA Nutrimeals, Energy Bars, and Rev3. People that brought something to send to the troops were given a free gift as our thanks. In addition to the USANA samples and health information we had Nadine Lederfine a Clinical Nutritionist available to answer questions about health and diet. Many thanks to the neighbors that attended, Nadine, a USANA friend Sylvia Adler, and to the many friends that helped us prepare the house for the event.
In my most recent post I suggested that anyone who had chosen to or was required to receive a vaccination for the H1N1 swine flu should be sure that they are vaccinated with the nasal mist form rather than the injectable form. The nose is the natural route to vaccinate for a respiratory infection and the nasal mist form of the vaccine is free of mercury-containing thimerosal.
I have heard that public health officials in Washington State, as part of their efforts to deal with H1N1 swine flu, have announced that they are suspending their restrictions on how much mercury can be injected into pregnant women or children under three years of age. Washington state law normally limits the amount of mercury that can be in vaccines for pregnant women and children under three. But now they say that for the next six months it’s okay for these patients to be exposed to the higher levels of mercury found in injectable swine flu vaccine. Read the complete Blog. Click here.

H1N1 Virus( Swine Flu) by Dr. Ray Strand.
This edition of the Healthy for Life Newsletter is going to focus on the H1N1 virus and give you some insight on this pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is projecting that over 40% of the population will be infected by this virus within the next two years. This viral flu is getting a lot of media attention and it creating some panic among everyone. However, even though this virus is going to affect many people, I do not feel that there is any need to be overly anxious and concerned because of all the media hype around this infection. Most of it is speculation and to date this virus does not seem to be as virulent or serious than the common seasonal flu. Also, this virus has been shown to be sensitive to some of our anti-viral medication (Tamiflu and Relenza). However, I do share the concerns of the CDC that this viral infection may become more serious during the winter months, when these infections are normally more serious. Click here to read more.

Sounds of September
If you live in the North East there are many sights, smells, and sounds to remind you that the new season is arriving. Many kids and adults are starting back to a new school while many are content with old school. The new TV season, College & Pro Football are ready for action. You can almost hear Hank Williams Jr, singing, "Are you ready for some Football"?
What's new with USANA? This edition of our USANA Newsletter is much like the first day of school. The USANA International Convention recently took place in Salt Lake City Utah. We have exciting news from the Convention and new products in our Blog Updates, Vitamin D in the news from Dr's Christine Northrup and Dr. Ladd McNamara, Emergency Preparedness, and remembering many that made a difference. Just like the first day of school there will only be a little bit of homework in this issue.
USANA Convention
The 17th annual USANA Convention began on Thursday August 27th. USANA Associates heard great announcements and some news we would like to share with you. Our Blog Updates will be out of order this month and not by posting date so that we can bring you news about new USANA Products, Children's Hunger Fund 5k Run, Larry King, & USANA Athletes at the Convention.
There are more updates that are BC(before Convention) that we posted in August also.

Prevent Breast Cancer with Vitamin D By Dr. Christiane Northrup
There's a paradigm shift going on in medicine as new research reveals a far greater role for vitamin D. Vitamin D is not just for kids—or the prevention of rickets. Optimal levels of Vitamin D (40–80 ng/ml) enhance the creation and functioning of healthy cells throughout the body. In addition to protecting the bones and boosting the immune system, studies show that Vitamin D helps prevent certain cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate and colorectal. Vitamin D 1000 IU/day is critical for your health. by Ladd McNamara, M.D.

Emergency Preparedness Month.
What have you done to prepare for an emergency? There are number emergencies that can strike quickly affecting you and your family. It could be Earthquake, Flood, Hurricane, H1N1 Flu (Swine), Fire, or Terrorist Attack. There are several websites to help you prepare for an emergency. Here are a
few.
It is recommended that you prepare a 72 hour kit filled with essentials to sustain you during that time. We would like to suggest adding the USANA Essentials. Health Pak, or My Health Pak along with USANA Nutrition Bars to your kit. Health and Nutrition should not take a back seat during an emergency.
We remember those that made a difference.
This month marks the anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks. We prayed for those that lost their lives and their families. The first responders and survivors put strangers ahead of themselves and showed us not just courage but American Courage, Will and Spirit. Currently Firefighters are battling many fires here in Ca. The words of Mariah Carey's Hero will close the USANA Newsletter. And then a hero comes along With the strength to carry on And you cast your fears aside And you know you can survive So when you feel like hope is gone Look inside you and be strong And you'll finally see the truth That a hero lies in you.

The Dog Days of Summer
We turn the page on another month and can see and feel the Dog Days of Summer barking at us with high intensity. Some of the thoughts this Summer are the ever popular are we there yet, why did the air conditioner have to go out today, does my team still have a chance to win the Pennant, or how many days before they go back to school?
Another hot topic this summer is the ongoing debate about Nationalized Health Care. One thing is clear either way, it is now more important than ever for to us to take control of our own health and the health of our loved ones. Our USANA Newsletter this month features information about some of the leading chronic diseases such as Heart Disease, Diabetes from Dr Ray Strand, and Obesity. We will also include our Blog Updates, news from Dr Wentz about MyHealth Pak, The USANA Product Advsor, the product of the month MyHealth Pak, and making a difference this summer in the lives of your children or children in your life.
Heart Disease Public Enemy Number 1.
Year after year Heart Disease kills more Americans that any other Chronic Disease. The Surgeon General has said that up to 60% of Heart Disease is preventable. Here are some facts about Heart Disease.
- Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States.
- In 2009, heart disease is projected to cost more than $304.6 billion, including health care services, medications, and lost productivity.
- In 2003, approximately 37% of adults reported having two or more of six risk factors for heart disease and stroke (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, currently smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity).
The CDC has more information available by clicking here .
Diabetes is a Choice by Dr. Ray Strand.
One of the greatest challenges to our health care system is the dramatic rise in the incidence of both obesity and diabetes. In the U.S. and Canada, diabetes has increased more than 500% during just the last generation. More than seventy percent of adults and more than thirty percent of our children are considered to be either overweight or obese. In spite of spending more than 30 billion dollars each year on diets and weight loss programs, the rate of obesity has tripled in this country in the past thirty years. Even more alarming is the fact that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has projected that one-third of our children born after the year 2000 will become diabetic. Click here to read more.

The Evolution from the USANA Essentials to MyHealthPak.
Last month Dr. Wentz shared some insights about the evolution of products offered by USANA to maximize our health. As a Bio Medical Scientist he always is looking at the advance of Technology especially when it used to optimize our bodies and our cells.
When USANA came out with the Essentials they were unlike any other nutritional supplement available on the market. The Optimizers were then developed to provide people additional supplemental tools to maintain their health.
The goals of convenience and consistency were achieved when the HealthPak was introduced by combining the Essentials and two of the top optimizers Proflavanol and Calcium.
Dr Wentz says that the MyHealthPak is the ultimate in specialization and convenience for your nutritional supplement needs.
Each person's specific nutritional needs are based on several factors including genetics, lifestyle and environmental exposure to various stresses. Your personal biochemistry is a complex web of interactions that controls the ways your body absorbs and metabolizes such nutrients as vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and carbohydrates. The scientific name is Bio Chemical Individuality.
Dr Wentz mentions Linus Pauling & Dr. Pauling's book, How to Live Longer and Feel Better. He quoted directly from the book, "some simple and inexpensive measures that you can take to lead a better and longer life with greater enjoyment and fewer illnesses. The most important recommendation is to take some vitamins everyday to supplement the vitamins you that you get from food."
Since the beginning, USANA has offered Nutritionals you can Trust to be the best available anywhere. MyHealthpak is the latest of a series of advances in USANA's efforts to employ technology for optimizing life. As your life changes you're MyHealthPak can change with your lifestyle. It's up to you to maintain your health now and in the future.

Celebrate our Nation's Birth
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Those seven words are part of a larger context of words forever linked to the Declaration of Independence. On July 4th 1776 Fifty Six men approved and later signed on August 2nd a document that was not only considered treasonous but has become one of the defining moments in history.
This month our USANA Newsletter shares in the celebration of the 233rd birthday of the United States, Omega 3 benefits, our skin & Omega 3, understanding the Glycemic Index by Dr. Christine Wood ,Blog updates, customize supplementation for your lifestyle and your needs, USANA Product of the month Nutrimeal, and making a historical difference in your life and the lives of others.

Understanding the Glycemic Index by Dr. Christine Wood.
This information comes from Dr. Wood's Website. Christine (Ito) Wood, M.D., C.L.E. is a practicing pediatrician and certified lactation educator with interests in healthy nutrition for children and the environmental and nutritional impact on health and disease.
High glycemic index (GI) foods release sugar into the bloodstream quickly, causing a rapid rise in blood sugar. Low GI foods release sugar into the bloodstream slowly and do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. High GI foods tend to lead to weight gain and are low in fiber. These foods are easy to overeat and encourage a rapid return of hunger.
Low GI foods are less likely to store as fat and maintains more stable energy levels. Low GI foods:
- reduce the hunger urges by delaying the rate of absorption.
- cause lower insulin levels that make fat easier to burn
- reduce the risks of diabetes and heart disease

Mentors & Heroes
Starting with the moment we are born and often before, our lives are shaped by Mentors and Heroes directly and indirectly. Historically, we focus our tributes, respect, and mainly honor to Mothers and Fallen Heroes this time of year. We recognize the sacrifices they paid to enrich our lives.
Mothers have mentored, influenced, and been the first Heroes in our lives. They could be our own Mom, a Step Mom, an Aunt, Grandmother, Mother in Law, Friends, Daughters, Daughters in Law, or the Mother of our Children. Mothers also serve in the Military and many will be away from their Children this year.
We also take a moment to acknowledge that our great Country owes a tremendous debt to the Men and Women that paid the ultimate price so that we may enjoy Freedom, in addition to Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
This edition of our USANA Newsletter pays tribute to Mothers and fallen Heroes, a timely article about Swine Flu, an article about increased vitamin sales in the recession, Blog updates, Resveratrol, USANA being named as one of the best companies to work for by Outdoor Magazine, Dr Regina Hamlin, product of the month, Voices of a Never Ending Dawn, making a difference and supporting others.
Swine Flu in Mexico: The "New" Bird Flu
by: Sherri Tenpenny, D.O.
We knew this was coming. Even though the bird flu hype was removed years ago from the nightly news, planning for the global pandemic and the development of pandemic flu vaccines has continued with little notice. Our government has instructed FEMA, made checklists for Homeland Security, given action plans to State and local authorities. These plans include methods and drills for global inoculation with a vaccine that will no doubt have the same deadly consequences as the Swine Flu vaccine in 1976.Please read the entire article by following this link:

USANA offers Resveratrol in the AO Booster which can be found in the Health Pak 100 & MyHealthpaks. What shape are you in?
People come in all different sizes and shapes. Women especially label their body shape as an hourglass, apple, pear, and banana among others. Some will tell you that round is also a shape.
We often think of shape when referring to your physical condition such as in shape, or out of shape. It can reflect an ultimatum when someone says shape up or ship out.
This edition of our newsletter is for anyone who is a competitive athlete and exercises every day, anyone that exercises three to five times a week, or anyone who plans to exercise some day. Features include tips for getting started, blog updates, Dr. Ray Strand, product of the month, and making a difference.
Tips on getting started
The Reset program from USANA (our product of the month) features an exercise program for beginners led by world renowned athletes Derek Parra & Jennifer Azzi. Exercise burns calories to speed up weight loss, it builds muscle mass, which raises your metabolism, and it helps reduce stress and depression, which can lead to overeating for many people.

We often feel that exercise has only become important in our lifetime. Plato and Thomas Jefferson must have been ahead or their times.
"Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it." Plato
"Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far." Thomas Jefferson

Quality in your life
Quality has many definitions that include a person's character, a degree of excellence, your life, your health, and often used by busy parents that wish to make the most of time with their children. Henry Ford said, "Quality is doing it right when no one is looking".
Do you appreciate quality when it comes to goods or services? The vision of USANA includes these words about quality. To manufacture the highest quality, science-based products that people can trust-what is on the label is what is in the bottle-providing the maximum bioavailability for better health around the world and giving everyone the opportunity for a better quality of life
Our newsletter this month will feature the quality of USANA Nutritionals that is known as the USANA Difference, blog updates, an article by USANA Associate Nadine Lederfine titled Pizza or Penicillin, eating healthy on a budget, a guide to the USANA Products to fit your lifestyle and health concerns, the USANA product of the month, social networking, and making a difference by supporting others.
The USANA Difference
Dr Myron Wentz says," Most health supplements fall far short of meeting the nutritional needs of the body's cells." There are many choices for nutritional supplements that can be found at grocery stores, vitamin stores, drug stores, discount stores, are advertised on TV or radio, or can be purchased over the internet. The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements (http://www.comparativeguide.com/index.html ) has rated over 1500 Nutritional Supplements from North America. What is the main tool you use to guide you through the endless number of choices? Is it price, convenience, name brand, or quality?
USANA is committed to manufacturing the highest quality products. It is known as the USANA Difference.

Pizza of Penicillin-What is really in your vitamins? by Nadine Lederfine
This section of our newsletter is from professionals with USANA. Nadine Lederfine is a Certified Nutritionist in Southern California. She can help you with your nutritional concerns or needs. Please contact us if you would like Nadine to provide a consultation for you. A few years ago she wrote an article that appeared in the Long Beach Press Telegram.
In 1994 nutritional supplements that were under food law were reclassified and instead of being under "food" law were now in the new category of "dietary supplements" (DS). Congress enacted a law known as DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act), and certain changes were made to the food laws to regulate dietary supplements differently than food. Under DSHEA, the FDA was to establish GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) rules for the DS industry using current Food GMP regulations. However, the FDA has still not established the GMP rules for dietary supplements, thus DS products and still monitored under food GMP.
The two current rules (Food GMP and Drug GMP) have dramatic differences.
Food GMP focuses on "safe" food items, meaning no harmful poisons or biological pathogens are in the finished product. Food GMP does not require testing of each batch or even of the ingredients for these harmful elements. The only stipulation is that they use ingredients generally recognized as safe for human consumption and they maintain good hygiene practices.
An example of food GMP would be when ordering a pizza, the pizza maker uses flour, water, salt, yeast, tomato paste, herbs and spices, cheese, etc. None of these ingredients need to be tested for safety as they are generally recognized as safe. As long as they kitchen is clean – clean dishes, hand washing, etc., it is compliant with food GMP. Because dietary supplements are regulated under the food GMP rules, the finished product does not have to be tested, nor do the ingredients need to be tested to verify the claims on the label. Say for example a product is manufactured and states on the label that it has 100 mg of vitamin C. Under the current law you do not have to test the ingredients you use or test the finished product to verify that it indeed contains 100 mg of vitamin C. In fact, it may not contain any vitamin C or just a fraction of the 100 mg stated on the label. On the other hand, it may contain more than the amount stated on the label, and in some cases that could be very harmful. The manufactures are not required to do the test, so why spend the extra money to test if it is not required!
Now think of penicillin. You expect a higher quality for penicillin than you do pizza. Drug GMP is much more restrictive. Drug GMP is focused on safety, potency, purity and efficacy. Drug GMP does mandate testing to document safety, potency, purity and efficacy. It also mandates testing of the finished product to guarantee all of these as well. Hygienic practice is also more restrictive. Also, uniformity, validation process, controls and stability are required. Hence, the difference between pizza and penicillin.
How do you want your dietary supplements manufactured? Do you want pizza or penicillin? Make sure your supplements are manufactured under pharmaceutical, or drug GMP and not food GMP and that they meet USP (United States Pharmacopia) guidelines to insure you are getting what you think you are getting and what is stated on the label.
Eating Healthy on a budget
Today the main topic of conversation is about the challenges we are facing in our economy. Many headlines are filled with the "Chicken Little" scenarios about doom and gloom. We do have choices in every part of our life, especially when it comes to what our family eats.
Fast food giants such as McDonalds are offering "Value Meals" and are showing record profits. America and everyone that consumes the western diet can gain weight during an economic downturn when we make the convenient and inexpensive nutritional choices.
There are benefits about eating home cooked meals, you know the quality of the ingredients, you trust the chef, you are not eating processed foods, and mainly families can eat together again at the dinner table.
We found an article from Consumer Reports Health.org titled" Downturn Diet". It offers suggestions about eating healthy. Please use this link to read the article. http://www.consumerreports.org/health/healthy-living/diet-nutrition/diets-dieting/dieting-on-a-budget/downturn-diet/dieting-on-a-budget-downturn-diet.htm
