Quality in your life

Quality has many definitions that include a person's character, a degree of excellence, your life, your health, and often used by busy parents that wish to make the most of time with their children. Henry Ford said, "Quality is doing it right when no one is looking".

Do you appreciate quality when it comes to goods or services? The vision of USANA includes these words about quality. To manufacture the highest quality, science-based products that people can trust-what is on the label is what is in the bottle-providing the maximum bioavailability for better health around the world and giving everyone the opportunity for a better quality of life

Our newsletter this month will feature the quality of USANA Nutritionals that is known as the USANA Difference, blog updates, an article by USANA Associate Nadine Lederfine titled Pizza or Penicillin, eating healthy on a budget, a guide to the USANA Products to fit your lifestyle and health concerns, the USANA product of the month, social networking, and making a difference by supporting others.

The USANA Difference

Dr Myron Wentz says," Most health supplements fall far short of meeting the nutritional needs of the body's cells." There are many choices for nutritional supplements that can be found at grocery stores, vitamin stores, drug stores, discount stores, are advertised on TV or radio, or can be purchased over the internet. The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements (http://www.comparativeguide.com/index.html ) has rated over 1500 Nutritional Supplements from North America. What is the main tool you use to guide you through the endless number of choices? Is it price, convenience, name brand, or quality?

Pizza of Penicillin-What is really in your vitamins? by Nadine Lederfine

This section of our newsletter is from professionals with USANA. Nadine Lederfine is a Certified Nutritionist in Southern California. She can help you with your nutritional concerns or needs. Please contact us if you would like Nadine to provide a consultation for you. A few years ago she wrote an article that appeared in the Long Beach Press Telegram.

In 1994 nutritional supplements that were under food law were reclassified and instead of being under "food" law were now in the new category of "dietary supplements" (DS). Congress enacted a law known as DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act), and certain changes were made to the food laws to regulate dietary supplements differently than food. Under DSHEA, the FDA was to establish GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) rules for the DS industry using current Food GMP regulations. However, the FDA has still not established the GMP rules for dietary supplements, thus DS products and still monitored under food GMP.

The two current rules (Food GMP and Drug GMP) have dramatic differences.

Food GMP focuses on "safe" food items, meaning no harmful poisons or biological pathogens are in the finished product. Food GMP does not require testing of each batch or even of the ingredients for these harmful elements. The only stipulation is that they use ingredients generally recognized as safe for human consumption and they maintain good hygiene practices.

An example of food GMP would be when ordering a pizza, the pizza maker uses flour, water, salt, yeast, tomato paste, herbs and spices, cheese, etc. None of these ingredients need to be tested for safety as they are generally recognized as safe. As long as they kitchen is clean – clean dishes, hand washing, etc., it is compliant with food GMP. Because dietary supplements are regulated under the food GMP rules, the finished product does not have to be tested, nor do the ingredients need to be tested to verify the claims on the label. Say for example a product is manufactured and states on the label that it has 100 mg of vitamin C. Under the current law you do not have to test the ingredients you use or test the finished product to verify that it indeed contains 100 mg of vitamin C. In fact, it may not contain any vitamin C or just a fraction of the 100 mg stated on the label. On the other hand, it may contain more than the amount stated on the label, and in some cases that could be very harmful. The manufactures are not required to do the test, so why spend the extra money to test if it is not required!

Now think of penicillin. You expect a higher quality for penicillin than you do pizza. Drug GMP is much more restrictive. Drug GMP is focused on safety, potency, purity and efficacy. Drug GMP does mandate testing to document safety, potency, purity and efficacy. It also mandates testing of the finished product to guarantee all of these as well. Hygienic practice is also more restrictive. Also, uniformity, validation process, controls and stability are required. Hence, the difference between pizza and penicillin.

How do you want your dietary supplements manufactured? Do you want pizza or penicillin? Make sure your supplements are manufactured under pharmaceutical, or drug GMP and not food GMP and that they meet USP (United States Pharmacopia) guidelines to insure you are getting what you think you are getting and what is stated on the label.

Eating Healthy on a budget

Today the main topic of conversation is about the challenges we are facing in our economy. Many headlines are filled with the "Chicken Little" scenarios about doom and gloom. We do have choices in every part of our life, especially when it comes to what our family eats.

Fast food giants such as McDonalds are offering "Value Meals" and are showing record profits. America and everyone that consumes the western diet can gain weight during an economic downturn when we make the convenient and inexpensive nutritional choices.

There are benefits about eating home cooked meals, you know the quality of the ingredients, you trust the chef, you are not eating processed foods, and mainly families can eat together again at the dinner table.

We found an article from Consumer Reports Health.org titled" Downturn Diet". It offers suggestions about eating healthy. Please use this link to read the article. http://www.consumerreports.org/health/healthy-living/diet-nutrition/diets-dieting/dieting-on-a-budget/downturn-diet/dieting-on-a-budget-downturn-diet.htm
